Holly Brook

Holly's debut album was released less than a year ago, but it's already been getting plenty of airplay. Her voice and musical abilities have been showcased in the new TV show "The Black Donnelys," MTV's "The Hills," and the animated film "Happily N'Ever After." It's no wonder though, as her distinctive sound is as refreshing as the trickling of a cool country stream in the early dawn of Fall. What's possibly most interesting about Holly Brook, however, is that she just turned 21; so it seems that we should be enjoying her music for years to come.

Q: Not many musicians can say that they've had a CD released on a record label before their 21st birthday, how has this experience been for you?

HB: It's been great, however, when I came to L.A. I didn't even know what a record deal was. I didn't approach it like I had this goal to put out a record. I just make music nonstop and that seems to lead to the other things.

Q: From a very early age you and your mother performed as a duo under the name Generations, and actually recorded a few independent records together. Other than your mother, who else has played a vital role in making you the musician that you are today?

HB: Way too many people to mention here... friends, family, musicians, teachers, artists. But I must say that Jon Ingoldsby has probably had the biggest effect on me. He was who helped me hone my writing skills and define my sound.

Q: Having gone from a small town in Wisconsin to the bright city lights of Los Angeles must've been a bit of a culture shock for you. How did you adjust to this change, and do you prefer big cities or small towns?

HB: I didn't adjust very well. I like small towns. But I focus so hard on music that the rest is just kind of a blur. It doesn't really matter where you live but how you live.

Q: You received quite a bit of recognition for your contribution on Fort Minor's song "Where'd You Go." How did that collaboration come about?

HB: We were on the same record company, and seeing how they needed a female vocalist on the song, it just made sense.

Q: Your musical contributions have been featured on television shows and movies such as Happily N'Ever After; is it strange for you to be watching something and suddenly hear your music playing?

HB: I don't watch TV so I don't really know ;-)

Q: You list Joni Mitchell and Neil Young as two of your many influences. What are your favorite songs by them?

HB: Again, too many to mention but Case Of You, Amelia and Heart of Gold come to mind right now.

Q: What are your plans for 2007? Will you be doing any touring?

HB: Probably some touring a little later in the year, yes. For news on that and other things, watch my website HollyBrookMusic.com and MySpace/HollyBrook for changes.

Q: Your song "Saturdays" is one of my favorite songs off your album Like Blood Like Honey. It has a very good message, and a bit of irony to it. What was your inspiration behind it?

HB: I was bored on a Thursday but the syllables didn't fit so I used my artistic license and stuck Saturday in there instead.

Q: You've mentioned a desire to one day write a book. If that opportunity presents itself, under which genre of literature do you think you'd write?

HB: Horror! Just kidding. Oh I have a lot of ideas....Kids books, young adult novels, philosophy, etc. I think I'll just write them all and see what happens.

Q: We end all of our interviews with word association. We say wombat and you say...

HB: Wildcat!
