Butterfly Boucher

Butterfly Boucher may have a very cool name, but that's nothing compared to the music that she creates. Along with opening for Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan, her music has also been featured on numerous TV shows including Charmed, Spin City, and Grey's Anatomy. Fans of the lovable ogre Shrek can also hear Butterfly on Shrek 2's soundtrack, in which she performs a duet with David Bowie in a remake of his classic song "Changes."

Butterfly is currently finishing work on her second album and you can stay up-to-date on its progress at her MySpace page MySpace.com/ButterflyBoucher

Q: Your album "Flutterby" has my vote for album of the decade. Every song resonates with spirit, effervescence and depth. I guess the only thing I didn't like about it was the fact my ex-girlfriend used to play "I Can't Make Me," as a not so subtle hint that she was about to break up with me. Would you consider writing a song called "It's Ok, Simon. You're Better off without Her"?

BB: Most certainly! Hmm let's see, I'm thinking it should be something up beat with a strong party vibe, just to really drive home that you're doing just fine, in fact, you're having a really great time without her. Cool?

Q: I had the pleasure of meeting you after you opened up for Sarah McLaughlin in Raleigh, NC. On a side note, your fantastic set was only overshadowed by your candor, charm, and humbleness.

What are some of your favorite memories from working with Sarah?

BB: The first thing that comes to mind is her gift of burping. Yes, she is a charmed burper, one burp from her and you cannot help but be filled with inspiration. Actually to see how down to earth somebody can still be even when they are the F word (Famous!) was a really great thing to experience. Butterfly

Q: We here at Wicked Info are anxiously expecting your second album which is tentatively titled Scary Fragile. Judging by the early track releases on iTunes it's going to be another remarkable effort. What can fans expect from the album and what has been its inspiration?

BB: Um gosh, I'm so close to it it's kinda hard to know. Well I'm not gonna lie to you, this second album has been a difficult birth! (And not by my doing ... let's leave it at that!) Really, you will have to be the judge, but I think (I hope) my writing has matured. My voice got a lot stronger from being on the road doing all that touring, so hopefully that shows on this record.

My subject matter hasn't really changed, I'm still writing from a very personal place, or at least my songs generally start from a personal experience and then I build onto them. I like to think this new album has the same charms as Flutterby but with extra badass-ness. I've grown up a lot since recording Flutterby and I think my music has too.

Q: Many artists claim that their best writing comes from times of severe or pronounced sadness. Do you say rubbish or fact?

BB: For me it is "Fact." I find it really hard to sit down and write when I'm happy. Sitting down and writing is difficult, period! I'm not a very prolific writer. I can come up with music 'till the cows come home, but writing lyrics is really hard for me. A good dose of sadness always helps.

Q: Your frequent blogs on MySpace show your genuine desire to connect with your fans. Speaking of them, can you share with us the sweetest thing a fan has ever done (and then let's toss in the scariest thing a fan has ever done)?

BB: SWEETEST THING - Getting messages and comments on my MySpace from people saying how much my music means to them is incredibly sweet. That really means a lot to me.

Recently a very generous and thoughtful fan of mine bought me a piano as a house warming present! Truly amazing, I've already written a few songs on it (the first one went something like "I have a Piano and I love it so").

SCARIEST THING - Thankfully I haven't had anything scary happen. I think you have to be famous to really draw out the freaky fans.

Q: On your song "A Walk Outside,' you sing:

Which came first
The love or the love song?
Which is more important
In the long run?

May I humbly submit that I think (and this is just an educated guess) that it was love. How has your personal love life impacted the music you make?

BB: It's inspired many a song. Most of my love songs start out as very personal and then I make them more dramatic and poetic!

Rockin' it outQ: During your current stay in the States, you no doubt have noticed a multitude of cultural differences from your native Australia. Can you share with us the major disparities that come to mind?

BB: Well actually I've been living here on and off (mostly on) for a while now, about eight years. I've started to forget all the things I noticed when I first came here. This question is too hard!

Q: What is the best song you've written in the absolute smallest amount of time?

BB: Drift On, from Flutterby, I think was the quickest and most painless song I've ever written to date. I'm pretty pleased with how that came out.

Q: Where can we catch more of you in 2008?

BB: For now MySpace is the best place to catch me! Whenever I have news to tell, that is the first place I go to tell it. I've been putting up sneak peeks of my songs from my new unreleased album on my MySpace player and I put up silly videos every now and then too. Touring is on the cards for this year so hopefully you can catch me on the road soon!

Q: Butterfly, we always end interviews with word association and our trademark has been to use our dear ol' mascot. Given your original country of origin, you may enjoy this one a bit. So we say "wombat" and you say...

BB: A Giant Poo with legs! Is that the wrong answer?! That's gross.
