My Box in a Box

Good comedic parody is something that we really enjoy here at Wicked Info, but a great parody of a parody? Even better. A few months ago Saturday Night Live featured a musical parody of boy band love songs entitled "Dick In A Box." Shortly after the SNL episode aired, a parody of it was made by "Bunny" entitled "My Box In A Box" (the video at the top of the interview). Bunny, as it turns out, is more than just one person. Along with producer Rick Frederick and a collaborator named Ben, Bunny is also two parts female. The actress (and lipsyncher) in the video is Melissa Lamb, and the singer is Leah Kauffman.

Both Melissa and Lamb were kind enough to answer our questions about everything Bunny (and more). The interview is below, but for a complete Bunny fix make sure to go to their website at MyBoxInABox.com and their MySpace page at MySpace.com/MyBoxInABox

Q: Ladies your viral internet sensation "Box in a Box," has truly become a smash hit. I love its sound and firmly believe that the song is much catchier than its inspiration "Dick in a Box." How exciting has it been to see its popularity grow over the past couple months?

Leah: Thanks! It's been bizarre. We recorded the song in a couple hours and I remember after singing that "it's a beaver..." thing a few times I said to Rick (the producer) something like "imagine if this is the first time I get a song on the radio." And sure enough - this song has been on a bunch of stations.

Melissa: Similar here. When we were shooting it I was not thinking it would end up on MSNBC.

Q: What are three words that Melissa would use to describe herself?

Melissa: Hmmm..."outside the box?"

Q: With the popularity of the video I'm sure that the Saturday Night Live and NBC team are well aware of it. Have either of you received feedback from people associated with SNL?

Melissa: Not exactly. Justin Timberlake said something like "I heard there's a girls version" to a newspaper. But I don't think SNL is knocking on our door any time soon.

Q: Has Melissa surpassed Milli Vanilli, Katrin Quniol (from the band Black Box), and Ashley Simpson as the world's best lip synching sensation?

Melissa: Well I'd say right we're at least right there with Katrin since I've never heard of him. I'm not sure the word sensation and Ashlee Simpson really go together. And Milli... no one will pass Milli. That Behind the Music was awesome.

Leah: You've got to blame it on the rain. Cause the rain don't care.

Q: Leah, did it surprise you that the infamous "box" sold for $1525 on eBay?

Leah: I'd say surprise is a good word. The money all went to charity and the guy who bought it sent us a thank you. But I do wonder where he keeps that thing.

Q: Melissa, how often are you recognized in public for your performance in the video, and is a career in acting something you plan to pursue?

Melissa: On campus - I get recognized a lot. Apart from that - not so much. I'm not looking for a career in acting, but another YouTube thing I'd be up for.

Q: Do you two plan to collaborate again with producer Rick Frederick?

Leah: Definitely possible. I've been friends with him for a while. The guy is very talented and we had fun doing this song together.

Q: A Craigslist ad was used to fill the role that Melissa was finally chosen for. What did the ad say, and what attracted Melissa to audition for the part?

Melissa: The ad just said "Looking for someone to be in a spoof video parodying Britney Spears, JoJo, Xtina and those type people." I figured I could do that.

Q: What else can we expect from you both of you in 2007?

Leah: I'm working on an album, so hopefully that will come out this year. And maybe another song. And headed back to Temple University where I go to school.

Melissa: Me too. Mostly school stuff here at Penn.

Q: The tradition here at WickedInfo is to end all interviews with word association, so when we say wombat, you say...

Melissa: Oranges.

Leah: Beavers.
