7 Stupid Things That We Say Print E-mail

It's not stupid if I say it isn't.

1) "You too." - We've all said this when it wasn't relevant. For example, you're checking your baggage at the airport and the person behind the counter says, "Have a nice trip" to which you naturally respond, "You too." Or maybe someone says "Happy birthday" or "Enjoy your vacation" and you respond with the aforementioned "You too." It's a stupid thing to say, and you feel like an idiot the second you say it, but it comes naturally.

2) "Ouch." - Every time you hit your finger against a desk, or stub your toe, you instinctively say, "Ouch!" Of course, you then realize it didn't hurt at all, but you still can't help instinctively saying it.

3) "You sing great." - Nobody wants to be the bearer of bad news, especially if it deals with saying something negative to someone you like. Such is the reason why we tell people that they sound good when they totally ruin a Janis Joplin song. American Idol has made this issue all too apparent, with all the poor kids finding out for the first time that they sound worse than a dog in heat that's being kicked around like a child's football (so to speak)

4) "How are you doing?" - Let's face it, we rarely care how someone else is doing. We say this in passing, same as "Hello," but we're really not looking for an in-depth conversation. We want the person to say "Great, how about you?" and then pass on by. We may be a selfish society, but we can't help asking how someone is doing, as long as we don't have to wait for an honest reply. Test this out by saying "Pretty bad," next time someone asks how your day is going. You may get a simple follow-up question, but after that the topic is sure to be changed (if they haven't just walked by you without saying another word at all).

5) "It's the thought that counts." - Again, this is an old saying that basically means "You did a crappy job, but at least you thought about me." In reality, the thought doesn't count. If the thought counted, then why can't I just think about getting someone a birthday card and not actually do so? It's the thought that counts after all, right? Many a relationship has been ruined because the thought didn't count for Valentine's, a birthday, Christmas, or an anniversary.

6) "I love..." - We love all sorts of things. I personally love pizza. Ask anyone and they'll tell you it's true. But how can I feel the same way about my Red Baron pizza (or a nice slice from Oregano's), as I do about my child or a family member? It makes no sense, but we love all sorts of things that don't really amount to love. Although, I do love my wombat, so I guess I can be honest in that regard.

7) "It's the principle of the matter." - Let's face it, it's rarely the principle of the matter. People usually use this statement when arguing over something, or when complaining to a company about a product. If it was just the principle of the matter you would settle for writing a letter or making a phone call, but what you're really wanting is some sort of discount or refund. You can say it's the principle of the matter, but 99% of the time it's the financial circumstances of the matter.
