Matt Besser

Matt Besser has been making people laugh for years, whether they want to or not. His long list of credits include Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Upright Citizen's Brigade, and the short-lived Crossballs: The Debate Show. Be sure to check out his website, MattBesser.com, for information on upcoming performances and to learn all that you can about him without the need of stalking him first.

Q: In our opinion, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, was tragically under-valued. What didn't they seem to understand about the movie's comic brilliance?

MB: I think this came out on a bad weekend. It was the weekend that all the "important" movies come out and that's what the smart people were watching. Also, this wasn't one of those stupid parodies that stupid people like.

Q: In 1991 you helped to craft The Upright Citizens Brigade. Care to share some of the highlights and perhaps low lights of its inception?

MB: Not if I have to write it. What, am I trying to get into college again? You lazy young people! In my day interviews were done with tape recorders that you could hold in your hand. Okay, how about this: one time we did a scene out of the streets of Chicago and a gang banger tried to strangle me and I thought for a second that it was an improviser sneaking up on me to do a bit. That was my hi lo lite.

Q: How has being born in Little Rock, Arkansas shaped your comedy and your life?

MB: I wear a hog hat a lot and hog hats are funny.

Q: You recently got to "chew scenery" and human flesh as the main villain in a zombie comedy titled "Wanted Undead or Alive." How difficult is it to portray emotion from underneath layers of make up?Matt Besser as a zombie sheriff

MB: Not hard if your character is angry.

Q: Your MySpace lists Jason Kidd as one of your influences! How has the triple double grabbing, "fake migraine," claiming, no-look assist creating Maverick inspired you?

MB: Not since he left the Nets. Okay fine, I try to be a point guard in my comedy career. There, I said it.

Q: The November presidential election is knocking on the door. Whose ticket will you be punching for Prez?

MB: The obvious choice which is Hillary. Any woman who doesn't vote for Hillary should not call themselves a feminist. Holy shit, did I just say that?! That's right bitches!

Q: Your talent for improv has certainly been a major blessing for you, but has it ever been a bit of a curse?

MB: I can't stop improvising. Somebody stop it! I can't get off!

Q: What's a personal factoid that your fans would be shocked to learn?

MB: Little Donny's dick was not a prop.

Q: Where can we catch more of you in 2008?

MB: FREAK DANCE: THE FORBIDDEN DIRTY BOOGALOO. "When pop comes to lock, when you're breakin' on the make, sometimes you got to take a chance and dance." It's a lot of work being funny.

  • Freak Dance: The Forbidden Dirty Boogaloo, is a new musical theater extravaganza, I wrote and star in. Freak Dance is a straight up, in your face, activated story of how dancers from different worlds come together to save Fantaseez Dance Center, the soul of the streets where dancing is the dream of every street kid, combating the city building inspector, the rival studio, and the Forbidden Dirty Boogaloo.
  • Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in LA.
  • The Back Room is a sketch talk show series I'm doing on UCBcomedy.com. Subscribe if you like it.

Q: We end all interviews with word association. I say wombat and you say...

MB: "Wombat your mother last night."
