The Butcher

For three terrifying nights, Luke had been hiding from the madman with a knife. It was already Monday and he knew he didn't have much time left. Little Luke knew that the butcher, Lucinda Esdon, or as he was lovingly referred to "The Nightmare Killer," would eventually catch him. His goal now wasn't to escape, but instead to survive as long as he could. None of his friends would help him, they knew he was a goner and didn't want to get involved. Besides, if they helped him, it may be their life that would be taken instead. So Luke hid, and tried to stifle his cries into bails of hay. We all know that death comes eventually, but to know that it could be anytime, at any moment in the next couple of days is hard for anyone to handle. To come to grips with your own mortality, especially when you know it will end painfully, is no small task. It was while facing this dilemma that Luke decided to pay a visit to Paul "The Oinker." Paul was universally known to be very wise and had helped out plenty of others that had been chased by Lucinda.

"Paul, I think you know why I'm here today. The butcher is coming after me and I don't know how much longer I can hide from him. Please offer me some words of wisdom."

"Luke, you must accept your role in life. Your whole life has led up to the moment that the butcher finds you. You can either accept this fate and experience all that life has to offer in your final days, or you can continue to hide and live in fear until Lucinda finally finds you. Either way, he will find you, but only you can decide how you live until that moment.

"I know you're right Paul, but it's a hard fate to accept."

"Don't you think I know that? Most of my family has gone to meet their maker at the hands of Lucinda. We can't change who we are, or who Lucinda is, we can only live our lives to the fullest. Taste life, until life tastes you."

With these words, the two went their separate ways. Paul to his sty of a home and Luke to the barn where he often collected his thoughts. That evening, Luke enjoyed a quiet, but joyous meal with his family. Looking around at his family and friends he realized how lucky he actually was, and with a smile of thankfulness he bid his companions adieu before heading to bed. That night, he got his first full night of rest in almost a week. The next morning the butcher finally caught up to Luke and invited him to his family's Thanksgiving dinner. Luke, in fact, was to be the guest of honor.
